01 / ABOUT THE PLACE

About this place

Tucked into Nishi-Shinjuku's Omoide Yokocho Nakadori, Tsukiji Sandai is an oyster bar dedicated to raw oysters shucked to order right behind the counter. With only counter seats available, it caters naturally to quick stops for oysters and a drink amid the alleyway buzz.

The core of the menu is tasting sets highlighting oysters sourced from various regions across Japan. Guests can order combinations selecting 2 varieties from Region A, or 1 variety each from Region A and Region B, with individual oysters available to add from the 3 piece onwards. Flavor notes on the menu outline each oyster's saltiness, ocean salinity, sweetness, and creaminess, making it engaging to explore according to personal taste. Options like Uramura oysters from Mie Prefecture, known for their pronounced brine and pleasing bite, or Moji oysters from Fukuoka Prefecture, celebrated for balanced sweetness and umami, showcase distinct regional profiles that shift with the seasons and daily catch.

The beverage lineup is curated to complement the shellfish. Alongside white wine by the glass or bottle, diners can choose sakes such as the smooth Ichinokura or the dry junmai Oyama, Nikka Frontier highballs known locally as "Ball," and gin and soda. For a zesty pairing, the limoncello soda—blended with candied lemon peel liqueur—offers a lively, refreshing contrast.

The venue does not take reservations, operates strictly cash-only, and asks patrons to refrain from wearing perfume so that the subtle aromas of the oysters can be fully appreciated. It remains an ideal stop for enjoying fresh coastal delicacies in a brief, vibrant横丁setting.
